Trading Passions Expedition Journal Entry- Noatak River Portion- Day 9- 55kms

Picture
Waking up to rain again. Not waiting it out we stand dripping, drinking our coffees and eating our fresh blueberry filled oatmeal. Finally deciding, lets just paddle. See how far we can go. As the rain came down we packed up and set out. The shore eroding quickly with towering pieces from above crashing down the bank. Paddling around one corner the tundra turned from its fluorescent greens to a charred black land. The smell of burned ground still blew across the river with the rain.
Another grizzly lay resting by the water and startled, jumped up and ran over the bank and into the tundra. At 49.8kms we pull into a tiny beach by some cliffs to scout out camping. An old set of antlers lay in the grass. Blueberries ran rampant here. As we tried to remember our task of finding some flat ground we were easily distracted by the berries and continuously stopping to pick and fill a bag. The bugs were horrendous and with nothing but the tufted up ground of the tundra we ran to our boats. Waving our hands wildly in the air (like we just don’t care) shooing the bugs.  Diving into our boats I could see D ahead throwing water into the air trying anything to stop the cloud of bugs from following us. “Just paddle fast! We can out run them!” I jokingly yelled out. What we thought would be a beach was now flooded by the rising river and we carried on around the next bend, a big, beautiful beach. Still buggy and raining we set the tent up quick and stayed in our dry suites to eat dinner. The little flies we thought were just annoying turned out to be hungry man-eaters, taking chunks and leaving our hands with blood drips and welts. My knuckles have begun to split from continuously being wet. Lying in bed now I listen as the shore falls away into the river and I think what it will look like here in 20 years, or even just next, if I make it back, I will be paddling an entirely different river. Birds are singing me to sleep tonight as a funny wild chicken runs around. We want the trip to last long, but with this weather, we will continue our big days.
Until Tomorrow- Goodnight Neverland!

VSSL Voyager- Jillian Brown

Nothing is placed in front of you that you don’t have the strength to overcome; it’s just shifting your mindset to believing in one’s self enough. I started telling myself this while in an abusive relationship, and being thankful I knew I had that strength and that it was me there instead of someone who didn’t; cause they may not have made it out. Hearing PTSD, caused confusion and pain and yet, when I shifted into believing I could use this to empower me rather than withdrawing me, It opened me up to share, heal and inspire. It has allowed me to say yes (#sayyesmore ) to opportunities and challenges without fear or hesitation. If we each believe we can overcome, whatever that obstacle may be, as simple as getting up and still going, leaving the house without makeup on, or pushing to reach the next unclimbed summit, within all the negative pressures society and we put on ourselves, that right there is extraordinary and we each deserve to be proud of ourselves for those moments.
“Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you imagine.” #roytbennett

Mid- Canada Boat Show Presenter

Picture
“Just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you once again for exhibiting at the Mid-Canada Boat Show (@midcanboatshow )and the Manitoba RV Show & Sale (@manitobarvshow )You truly brought a very unique and compelling element to the show. Your enthusiasm and passion showed with every interaction with our guests. Great stories and I know that you opened the minds of everyone you talked with about photography, paddling and adventure travel. Best of luck and hope to see you again at this years events.” It had been a month or so, and I was now back in BC, since I had bumped into the Show manager at the Mid-Canada Boat Show as just a guest. As we wondered the show and I shared my story, I ended up being gifted a booth for the next day and entirety of the weekend (and then the following for the Manitoba RV Show) to display my expedition gear, share stories and inspire. It was a true honour that created incredible connections! Come last month when his familiar name popped up in my emails. I opened the message expecting to see the standard UPCOMING EVENT Email we all receive and I felt sad I knew I wouldn’t be able to attend and reconnect with so many incredible people. Instead I was fighting back tears of joy, excitement and once again honour - “ I was wondering if you would be available to join us at this years Mid-Canada Boat Show & Sale, March 5-8 at the RBC Convention Centre? It would be great if you could do 5 - 1/2 hour seminars ( 1-Thur,1- Fri, 2-Sat and 1-Sunday) on our Speakers stage. Our theme this year is "Discover the Water" and your adventures fit perfectly. If you would also like to set up a display for the rest of the time, that would be terrific.” – Dave , Show Manager It was a no-brainer! YES! I Am In! I’ll see you there!

CBC PTSD Documentary

Picture
‘How did they come upon me and my story?” Was all that kept going through my mind as I answered their email. CBC was reaching out inquiring if I would be a part of a documentary series, You Can’t Ask That. The series having a unique and candid feel to which each participant answers questions regarding what makes them individual. The first season having only focused on the physical aspect, from an autism episode, to limb differences, however, this new season was going to include mental health episodes. Of course there was no way such an important message of inclusion and another means to share could be answered with anything but a giant YES. With Terrance and I having met through these similar lived experiences, practises of routine and lessons, it was decided to bring both of us to answer questions together on the viewpoint of a partnership while overcoming each of our individual live journeys. The questions opened up a great dialog between the crew, producer and us, having laughter, fighting back tears and creating a powerful afternoon for all within the studio. “Once you start recognizing the truth of your story, finish the story. It happened but you're still here, you're still capable, powerful, you're not your circumstance. It happened and you made it through. You're still fully equipped with every single tool you need to fulfill your purpose.” #stevemaraboli

Faces of Mental Health

Faces of Mental Health National Campaign

Picture
It’s near impossible for me to find words to describe how honored and humbled I feel to have been invited to be one of the 5 faces of mental health this year for a nation wide campaign. CAMIMH’s Faces of mental health campaign works in partnership with @bell_letstalk to share the stories of 5 individuals, no different from yourself who do their best to live within a world that still holds a strong stigma towards the views of those battling with their mental health. Sharing my journey with others has been likely the most empowering, terrifying, learning and healing experience I have and will ever have throughout my life. I have felt more connection to not just others, but my own self through opening up about the struggles I have had and continue to work through each day. Sharing the tools to which have offered me growth and healing; In turn I feel I have truly learned compassion and felt it deeply from many others who share their stories and support. Treat mental health as an injury, not a disease, not something that can be caught or spread, but something that requires compassion, connection, a little routine and a few deep breathes. “How would your life be different if…You stopped making negative judgmental assumptions about people you encounter? Let today be the day…You look for the good in everyone you meet and respect their journey.” #stevemaraboli

A new Beginning

A New Beginning!
CEO- Lead Guide- Photographer

Picture
Up until this summer I had been a coach for many years, a public speaker, an art teacher, started and ran a dogsled guiding company, a painting foreman, photography instructor, so many incredible means of sharing and teaching my passions and yet, when it came to paddling, something I have done since birth, nothing. I am self-taught, with no certifications so I could never land anything more than being brought up as the unofficial guide for projects. With now some hundreds of days on paddling expeditions, often more than 300 days a year on the water training and exploring solo. This summer I was brought on as Lead Guide to the most incredible of organizations.  Put full trust in my abilities on and off the water in keeping each camper and facilitator safe and educated. From sharing knowledge of nature and wildlife, to the many canoe strokes that made it possible for the first time paddlers to reach camp quickly and efficiently. Most of all, though, we shared passion and our love for being, just being, as simple as that. Some found love on the water, others in the woods or on mountains, we all found a calling and a connection to a deeper more natural part of ourselves. And that is why my heart is overwhelmed at the opportunity to share and teach something I am truly passionate doing. “If a man is to shed the light of the sun upon other men, he must first of all have it within himself.” #romainrolland

MEC Edmonton
Connecting Passions Presentation

This past week I packed up the Jeep, and hit the road to Edmonton for another presentation; this time to the Paddling community of MEC Edmonton. The rain poured down as the morning drifted into afternoon and soon rolled into the evening. I pulled some of my go-to items from the shelves of the store and set up some photo post cards for the guests. As I finished up inflating the packraft and putting up my paddles, I looked over my shoulder, and there, walking in the door were two of my River Angel from last years expedition. Huge hugs and bigger smiles I couldn’t believe it! Seeing the invite posted, and the teaming rain, they detoured to listen while on route to Alaska. The amazing couple had given me a place to stay and recover from my broken foot and blisters after the portage over the Great Divide in Helena, Montana. The energy around them being there helped fuel my presentation and by the end I felt it had gone the best yet. Flowing and finishing up fluidly, like that of the rain that washed each in to the shelter to hear tales of adventure, mental health and how a tiny squirrel taught me about compassion.
“There are some moments in life That change us forever” #miminovic

BC Overland Rally Presentation

BC Overland Rally Presentation

Picture
By the time I pulled in, I was excited to see how a presentation would go with no photography to accompany. With my Jeep, Kayaks, Packraft and Paddles as a backdrop, it was about the pure stories. I was worried when I was first invited to present at the BC Overland Rally. Not being able to look over my shoulder to my imagery to help keep me on track, remind me of stories and distract if I fumble. However, the presentation seemed nothing but the opposite, flowing out with easy. Like having a conversation with hundreds of people I could see the smiles, here the laughter and gasps and nothing but my pure words. The questions had me knowing that each was paying mind to each word and story. As the weekend went on, I was overwhelmed by the people that would come up thankful, and sharing their own stories of adventure and mental illness. Creating genuine and intriguing conversations, as well as new friends and connections. The goal is always to connect others to my journey, to the wilds, and in turn, to themselves through these presentations, and yet again I was reminded this is a path I must take and is always worth it.

Huge thank you to Byron @explorelements for capturing the moments!

Cadets of Canada, Winnipeg
 Connecting Passions Presentation

Picture
Last night I had the absolute honour to speak in front of 150 military personnel and Cadets from a number of crops in Winnipeg. I had nerves going in but as everyone hushed and the first slide began, I felt the words and stories naturally flow from me. Sharing of how the term PTSD had led me back to the places I loved to seek healing. Teaching myself along the way that nothing is put in front of us we do not have the strength to over come, it’s just whether we know it yet. Stories of expeditions down the Grand Canyon and I watch as their eyes light up with images of the massive waves crashing down upon our vessel. Stories of sadness and joy, of hardship, struggle and overcoming. All encompassing passion and connection. As we call it a night a line forms and a crowd around me gathers as it seems everyone has questions and my heart over flows. The smiles, and the stories they begin to share and the one boy, even if he be the only one, who came up and said, “I have holes in my clothes too, my pack is taped but I still love being outside with it. And you have made me want to be out there more!”
“When you are called for a great duty because you have been given a great ability, do your very best to leave great footprints no matter what!” #ernestagyemangyeboah
