An early start to shower before heading down for the last free breakfast of our hotel.
There is energy and nervous (mostly from my mom) in the air. Not much is said at break. Soon we are back in the room quickly loading up the last of our gear into Ryan Trek’s vehicle. M and I walk over to the spot we have picked out for launch. We both have shades covering our faces. A drizzle and the sun beams through and a small rainbow is seen on the horizon.
The whole family (Ryan, mom & dad) help unstrap the canoe and carry gear down. Our launch spot is off a dock in a beautiful marina, surrounded by stunning sailboats and fishing vessels.
We find all our gear fits in easily with some room to spare, a huge relief. Last goodbyes, photos and we are off.
It’s a slow start, going back for footage and allowing everyone to catch up. Paddling along the town front we are soon at the docks coated in sealions. M is nervous and I am excited. Staying a safe distance we laugh as they bark and moan.
As we leave a large one swims straight up to us and along side, following behind M. Rounding the tongue it feels more like what I crave, signs of civilization dwindle, except for the last of the moored tankers. Paddling through marsh with pelicans, loons and cormorants. Seals pop up at a distance.
The channel narrows and it feels as if down south, floating horses, an otter and seal. 3 deer, eagles.
Stopping for lunch on an old dock, we carry on and can now really feel the power of the current and tide we dig in to round a bend. Impressed at our strength and momentum. Finding a camp spot was difficult and as we worked away along the low tides.
Finding another old dock, we decide this is the place and we tie up and unpack.
The tent takes a fair bit of time to figure out and is much larger than we need, but it will work. Another good to go meal stews as we chat and work some more on the tent. Dinner done and we are in the tent. Trying out more new gear, exped pad, pillow, sleeping bag. So far so good! Nice warmth to it even while watching my breath blow through the light of my headlamp.
